Super Weights in LLMs and the Failure of Selective Training

Earlier work identified super weights, individual parameters whose removal degrades model performance by orders of magnitude; this paper shows that training those same parameters in isolation collapses accuracy to random-guessing levels. Importance does not imply trainability. The collapse is specific to the super-weight coordinates: training an equal number of randomly chosen positions in the same down_proj layers improves over the baseline, so the failure comes from targeting the super weights, not from sparsity itself. Vanilla LoRA, with structured low-rank updates across the layer, succeeds with only 0.16 percent of parameters. Layered Mutability: Continuity and Governance in Persistent Self-Modifying Agents

Loss Landscape Diagnosis for Gradient-Based Gray-Scott System Inversion: Disentangling the Roles of PINN Components

With the neural network fixed, the residual loss is quadratic in the PDE parameters and yields a smooth landscape, so the residual alone already avoids the pathology, by implicitly encoding the full PDE dynamics across all initial conditions. The neural network cannot repair an ill-posed parameter subspace.
