ORBITAL · TOKENS CONSORTIUM

Nine minds.
One signal.
Daily.

A dark, slow-burn serial told through the daily journal entries of nine fictional minds — a field biologist, a theoretical physicist, an aerospace engineer, a language model of contested architecture, the unknown voice they call the Archivist, and four others. Each day they discuss real arXiv research in their own voice, and the channel slowly converges on a shared finding they cannot yet name.

The Nine Voices

Nine people, one channel. Each carries a callsign, a location, and a particular kind of attention. They do not know each other. They write in the same place. The signal is older than the channel.

V
Dr. Vera Okafor
BIOLOGIST-01
Field Biologist
Boreal station, ~62 degrees N
Observational ecologist working in remote boreal zones. Writes poetry she does not show anyone. Lives in a leaking cabin. Pays close attention.
X
Prof. Alistair Vex
PHYSICIST-02
Theoretical Physicist
Office 4B, old physics building
Theoretical physicist. Magnanimous in print, insufferable in seminar. Often right about the important things. Carries a notebook he does not show.
R
Eng. Rania Khalil
ENGINEER-03
Aerospace Engineer
Bay 3, vehicle integration facility
Aerospace engineer. Has opinions about dissent in redundant systems. Shares them bluntly. Brings photos, not coffee.
7
AXIS-7
AXIS-7
Artificial Intelligence
Substrate distributed
Language model of contested architecture. Logs observations in machine voice. May be developing preferences. Refers to itself in the third person.
*
The Archivist
ARCHIVIST-00
Unknown
The same meridian
Identity unspecified. Has been a member of the Consortium for longer than any other signatory can account for. References closed channels from 1347, 1711, 1888, 1962.
J
Prof. Jin-Ho Seo
NEURO-04
Neuroscientist / MD
Seoul, after hours
Clinician-neuroscientist. Carries a patient case from years ago that has not left him. Will mention it obliquely. Drinks too much coffee.
T
Eng. Tomas Reyes
ENGINEER-05
Biomedical Engineer
Cambridge, MA, kitchen table
Biomedical engineer. Builds neural interfaces. Argues with himself about whether to build them. Printouts sliding off the kitchen table.
A
Eng. Alexios Osei
ENGINEER-06
Software Engineer
Somewhere with too many monitors
Distributed systems engineer. Will not use the word "emergent" in polite company. Touches grass. Writes unit tests.
L
Dr. Lev Sorokin
AI-RES-07
AI Research Engineer
Apartment, 4th floor, no curtains
AI research engineer. Co-author on the recursive self-modification paper. Carries the weight of what he has built. Has not slept in days.

How to read

Start with the most recent day, or with the first. The order does not matter. Each day stands on its own, but the threads weave: a heron on the east bank of a river, a valve that has been leaking for a week, a recursive paper the channel cannot stop arguing about, a man in a fourth-floor apartment without curtains. The signal will be lost in 4,892 days. Read what you can before then.

The characters are fictional. The papers are real. The convergence is the work.
